American Public Media (APM) recently aired a one-hour special as part of their radio show, A Call to Mind. The Aging Mind program includes interviews with mental health providers, direct care workers, and older Americans living with mental health issues, and explores the unique mental health challenges of older adults, and the models in place to care for them. The program explores therapeutic solutions and improved treatment systems to help older adults and their wellbeing.
Included in the broadcast is a segment on Marsters v. Healey, the cross-disability class action lawsuit brought by CPR and its partners against the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2022. A landmark settlement agreement was reached in 2024 and, as a result, the Commonwealth is undertaking a set of actions to provide informed choice, case management services, specialized services, and residential services and supports necessary to transition no fewer than 2,400 class members from nursing facilities to the community.
You’ll hear from Steven Schwartz, lead attorney for the Plaintiffs, and Carol Chojnacki, a named plaintiff in the lawsuit who resided in a nursing facility for 3 years before moving to a group home in the community.
