DEAF-TALK AVAILABLE IN SOME
MASSACHUSETTS HOSPITALS
A survey by the Center for Public Representation has determined that
some Massachusetts Hospitals have a video conferencing system know as
“Deaf-Talk.” This system enables instant access to live ASL certified
interpreters via video-conferencing. Although not a substitute for
on-site interpreter services, Deaf-Talk enables emergency rooms to see
and treat deaf clients with medical or psychiatric emergencies more
quickly. As of the beginning of 2004, the following hospitals report
having Deaf-Talk available to their patients and staff:
Holyoke Hospital, Holyoke
Bay State Medical Center, Springfield
U Mass Medical Centers (Memorial and University), Worcester
Boston Medical Center
Cambridge Health System
Boston Children's Hospital
St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Brighton
South Shore Hospital, South Weymouth
